Why The HSC Isn’t the Be All and End All of the World

Why The HSC Isn’t the Be All and End All of the World

It is almost impossible to avoid the impression that your Year 12 mark matter more than anything else right now, but remember there are many roads that lead to the same destination.
Now, let me share with you the number of times I have been asked in an interview what my ATAR was… Zero. Now I am by no means saying that your ATAR score won’t give you more choices when it comes to selecting your university and courses but what I am saying is that if you don’t get the results you were hoping for you will still have the chance to prosper in your chosen field, remember it’s your own journey and you can undertake that journey in your own time.

Here is some food for thought in case you don’t quite get the marks you were after -
  1. Do you even know what you want to be when you grow up?...

You may feel like you are the only person in your friendship circle that doesn’t know exactly what course you want to undertake and what your plans for the future are, but guess what, you aren’t! There will be a massive group of students, just like yourself that have no idea what they want to do when they leave school and that is more than OK.
My point is that not getting the marks you wanted may actually lead you in a different path, perhaps you will enroll in a private course or start in a different course with the thought in mind that you will then transfer to another field only to realise that you are loving the course and happy where your studies are at. Have faith that everything happens for a reason and you are, right now, in this moment, exactly where you are meant to be.
  1. Richard Branson is the man and he didn’t even complete year 11 and 12..

Just saying… So I have just finished reading Richard Bransons autobiography (which is an epic read by the way) and he left school at the age of 16 and that’s how Virgin Records was born. This is just one story of millions of people who didn’t finish school let alone get to the HSC that have absolutely disrupted the system. This could be you as well with hard work, perseverance and the ability to think outside the box.
  1. Oh that poor guy…

Mark my words, you are 100% going to run into the guy in your class that you were 100% sure was destined for greatness 5 years down the track in a bar or shopping center and he will tell you that he has just quit his job, moved home from the big city and is on a soul searching mission because after completing his degree, getting the job he wanted and working his way up the corporate ladder he realised one night while lying in bed, listening to the rain that he was indeed miserable and in the wrong career. Take your time to choose your next steps, luckily you are young and have the world at your feet. And remember perfect marks don’t ensure a perfect life.
  1. Exams cannot measure all the amazing things that you are…

I’m not sure if you have seen the viral photo of the list of “Personal Qualities Not Measured By Tests”
  1. Your mental, physical and emotional wellbeing really is paramount...

Relax, take a deep breath... No matter your results, your life is going to be fulfilling and amazing.  As much as I fully support hard work and dedication towards one’s studies your own health is the most important thing in the world, so if the stress of the HSC is getting you down, I want you to take a break from your studies and go and do your favourite thing in the world, that could be as simple hanging with friends, eating your favorite meal or going for a surf. Print out the “Personal Qualities not Measured by Tests” list and stick in on your wall and remember greatness comes from what is inside you not what a number says.
You are enough.
