A day in the life of a strategy and consultant manager

Andrew Desilva: Strategy & Consulting Manager

Can you shortly describe a typical day on the job?

As a Strategy & Consulting Manager at Accenture a “typical day” varies as we are constantly working on different clients, projects and locations.
If I am working on a client project (and don’t need to fly interstate), a typical day would have a 7.30am start where I would plan my key activities related to client delivery and any important strategic activities required for Accenture.
Most of my time between 9 – 5 will be taken up by client meetings in which I will also be delegating key actions to my teams for execution.
From 5pm onwards I will be coordinating with my teams to put together key deliverables and outcomes for the day and plan for the next day.

Why did you choose Management Consulting as your career? What or who inspired you to do so?

After spending three years working in various industry roles, I noticed I was constantly searching for a new challenge after a few months.

Management Consulting allows me to have a lot more autonomy in my work and provides a constant challenge and dynamic environment.

It provides a lifestyle that keeps me on my toes as I have the opportunity to travel to various client offices and meeting new people to help solve some of their toughest problems.

What would you say are three key personality aspects or skills needed for this role?

  • Ability to Adapt – We are constantly placed in new environments, with new stakeholders and business problems.
  • Stakeholder Management – We are working with multiple senior stakeholders who all have their individual working styles and political agendas. We need to leverage our EQ to manage and work with clients in the most effective way possible.
  • Resilience – We are constantly working in extremely high-stress environments for long periods of time.

What have you learned about yourself through the work that you do?

A positive and resilient mindset can take you very far in life!

What’s been your best moment while doing your work?

Ability to travel overseas and meet colleagues from around the world.

And a hard moment?

Staying up all night to delivery a key milestone for the client.

How do you keep going when things get challenging?

I have a daily routine that I use to combat stress in challenging times:
  1. Morning Breathing / Meditation – Wim Hof Method
  2. 20 - 30 mins Morning Yoga
  3. Cold Showers (Game Changer)
  4. Daily Exercise – Running or Resistance training.

Are there any surprising or odd things that people wouldn’t expect if they picked this career?

Although it is a high-pressure career path, there is a very strong social culture. Usually we have social events twice a week and multiple lunches out with the client.

Can you share a funny or weird story about something you experienced while working on a project?

I was presenting to three of my client’s C-Level executives. At the end of the presentation, the CIO walked out of the room and the other two looked extremely disappointed. I walked out of the meeting room thinking I’ve just screwed up and I’ll probably lose them as client. I called my partner straight away to tell them what had happened, only to realise the client had played a prank on me!

What advice would you give to young people considering pursuing a career in this industry?

It’s not for everyone but if you’re ambitious, love to constantly learn and develop, meet new people and have a bit of fun then do it!
