Do you talk so much that you're pretty much fluent under water? Do you enjoy small talk and a bit of good banter? Isabella tells us why she loves working in retail and gives us insight into how much fun you can have working with your team mates and of course, meeting new people every day.

A day in the life of a strategy and consultant manager

Isabella Graiche: Retail Assistant

Can you shortly describe a typical day on the job?

I’ll get to work and find out where exactly I am placed around the store for that day. Most days I’m on the fitting room which is awesome because I can talk to all my other colleagues that come in to grab the return clothes. For my lunch break I’ll buy some delicious thai food from the food court outside my work.

Why did you choose to be a Retail Assistant as your casual job while studying? What or who inspired you to do so?

I love clothes and fashion and I knew that working in a retail store would be perfect for me, especially because I thrive off being around people.
Retail is a great job to have because you get to meet so many new people and make friends with all of the other people that you are working with.

What would you say are three key personality aspects or skills that make for a good Retail Assistant?

I think its really important to be a people person, being able to work well under pressure and of course, good time management skills.

What have you learned about yourself through the work that you do?

I’ve learnt that I am great with people and that I love to meet the new people that come in everyday, especially when I start to see locals come in that I know well. I’ve learnt that I love working in a team and helping my colleagues around me as they help me to get through the work day and do our best job.

What’s been your best moment while doing your work?

Some of the best moments are when you do something extra kind for a customer. I helped an older lady pick out a dress one day for her daughter’s birthday and she showed me all the dresses after she had tried them on in the change room and we picked the best one.
These kinds of moments put a huge smile on my face because the customers are so grateful for your help.

And a really hard moment?

A hard moment is when you get placed doing a job that you don’t like doing. For example, sometimes I get put on door greeter for a full day and it is not as enjoyable as maintenance, service desk, or dressing rooms because I can’t talk to my colleagues and see them as often around the store.

Another really hard moment is when a customer gets angry with you. Of course, the customer is always right and you must treat them with the utmost respect at all times, but unfortunately some people are having a really bad day and they can’t help but take it out on you.

How do you keep going when things get challenging?

I just remind myself that I love my job and I’m lucky to have it and work with such an amazing group of people.

Are there any surprising or odd things that people wouldn’t expect if they picked this career?

I think just how great some of the customers are and how much of a connection you can build with them in such a short time.

What advice would you give to young people considering pursuing a career in this industry?

I think anyone that loves to be around people and work in a team environment should go for it and take a shot at getting a job in retail.
It will be lots of fun and make sure you make an effort with your colleagues because you will find some great friends. Especially remember to be resilient when a customer is mad with you because it is okay and it is most likely, not actually your fault, they are just unhappy with a product or having a bad day.
