If you like to organise, analyse and check the accuracy of financial information, then you may be interested the accounting, banking & finance field.

You’d prepare budgets, financial statements, tax returns, audits and reports; manage payroll; maintain customer databases; comply with government regulations; develop business plans and match financial products to customer needs, for example.

You could work as a purchasing officer, accounts manager, bookkeeper or credit union senior officer, for example. Many people in banking & finance focus on customer service while others prefer ‘backroom’ research, analysis and reporting.

Most work takes place in a typical office setting; some people are able to do part of their work at home. The industry is changing rapidly due to global economic events, new digital technologies, government regulation, new markets and financial products.

Training & Qualifications

Financial services qualifications range from Certificate II to IV and include specialisations in credit management, mortgage broking, superannuation and risk management.

Related qualifications in Business Services include specialisations in business administration, record keeping or customer contact.

Human Resources

People in Human Resources (HR) help with the people side of things: employee relations, team building, team events, salary review, workplace safety and staff training for example. Good communications skills are essential; you’d also need to work carefully with confidential data, HR information systems and budgets.

You could work as a safety officer, workers compensation agent, human resources officer or injury rehabilitation manager, for example.

Training & Qualifications

Training in the Certificate IV in Business (Human Resources) includes units on how to:
• administer HR systems
• recruit and select staff
• process HR documents and inquiries
• co-ordinate HR services.
