Health
The health industry includes a diverse range of areas: dental, medical and optical, occupational therapy, pharmacy, indigenous health, mental health, community care, public health, aged care, disability services, fitness training, sports science, nutrition & weight loss, yoga, spas and lifestyle coaching, for example.
The Health Training Package has over 80 qualifications, so if you’re interested in health you’ll probably find an occupation and qualification to suit you!
Training & qualifications
A wide range of II, III and IV qualifications are available, offering specialisations in ambulance communications, indigenous environment health and dental assisting, for example. There are also specialist courses for instructors or trainers, such as:
• Fitness Instructor Course (Cert III in Fitness) • Personal Trainer Course (Cert IV in Fitness).

Beauty
Beauty therapists apply treatments to skin, hair and nails. The beauty industry employs many people both directly (eg in salons)and indirectly (eg in retail jobs involving the sale of hair, beauty,make-up and nail products).
People in this industry typically work in a salon environment — but may also work in resorts, salons, vacation destinations, day spas, cruise ships or hotels. You need to be healthy and well groomed, tactful and enjoy dealing with people.
There are increasing opportunities in the spa, massage therapy & relaxation fields. You could specialise in areas such as beauty therapy, retail cosmetic services, hairdressing or makeup. Many people in the industry end up with several careers, moving acrossindustry sectors and working in several employment areas such asfashion, film & TV, retail, training and management – or salonownership.
Roles and qualifications available include:
• Stage or TV makeup artist — Certificate III Live Production, Theatre & Events • Beauty Therapist — Certificate IV in Beauty Therapy • Freelance Make-up/Hair Stylist/Designer — Diploma of Specialist Make-up Services.
Supervisory or management qualifications are also available, such as the Diploma of Hairdressing Salon Management, designed for people who already own or manage salons.
