If you’re interested in programming or coding in Java or another language, fixing computers or designing data networks, for example — then the computing & IT field could be for you.
You’d obviously need to enjoy working with computers and information technologies. People skills can be important too — help desk, client support and project management roles require good interpersonal communication skills as well as problem-solving skills, for example.
The industry is diverse – computers and IT are an important part of just about every industry you can think of.
There are opportunities in data management, games & multimedia design, hardware and software maintenance and support, database design and networking. You could work as an electronics technician, a data communications tradesperson or website designer. With relevant qualifications and experience you could manage entire information systems.
Training & qualifications
Certificate IV and Diploma qualifications in information technology allow you to specialise in multimedia, websites, networking, databases, 3D animation & effects or programming, for example.
Advanced qualifications for supervisory or management roles include: • Network Manager — Certificate IV in Information Technology (Networking) • Security Consultant — Advanced Diploma of Information Technology (Network Security).
