What can I expect from my employer? As an apprentice or trainee, you are a valuable asset to your employer. You can expect support and supervision for your day-to-day training and for them to give you every opportunity to complete your apprenticeship or traineeship.
What is a training plan? You, your employer, and your training provider, need to develop a training plan for your apprenticeship or traineeship. You will need to choose somewhere to do your training. Contact ABL Apprenticeships Centre (ABLAC) on 1300 652 236 who will discuss the steps involved and will help you find a somewhere suitable. It could be either a TAFE, or a private Registered Training Organisation (RTO).
Where will I study? You and your employer must select a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) to provide training.
How much will I get paid? Your wage will be dependent on the industrial award you are paid under and may vary according to your age, how long you have been out of school, and the industry you are working in.
How much will it cost me? Your training provider will advise you of your enrolment fee, however a large number of employers cover this cost.
What Australian Government incentives are available for me? As an apprentice or trainee you may be entitled to Australian Government incentives such as Living Away From Home Allowance, Support for Mid Career Apprentices, Wage Top Up or the Commonwealth Trade Learning Scholarship. Can I start my training in high school? School based apprenticeships and traineeships allow senior high school students to commence an apprenticeship or complete a traineeship while at school.
I am already in paid employment? If you are already employed, you can still do an apprenticeship or traineeship, you just need to talk with your employer about the options and what you want to achieve in your career. Use this as an opportunity to formally recognise your skills and experience to make yourself more employable in the future.
