With National Youth Week almost upon us for another year, set to involve over 750 events, 151 councils and close to 85,000 young people - here at the Skillsroad office we thought we’d shed some light on our picks for the top events (that are either free, or close to it!) across Sydney, two wild cards from regional NSW and a couple from around the Country!

1)

It all kicks off at the MCA this Friday Night with a symposium Hosted by hilarious sisters Hannah and Eliza Reilly (from Girls Gone Mild on FBi 94.5), five extraordinary young people (including NSW Young Australian of the Year Genevieve Clay-Smith, Activist Chris Wright, Visual Artist Jackson Stacy, Three Farm founder Mel Fuller and Fighting Chance Australia’s Jordan O’Reilly) share their incredible journeys with us, Free to attend and sure entertain, challenge and inspire you, all topped off with free snacks, live music and awesome art-making activities in the beautiful Creative Studios overlooking Sydney Harbour. While tickets for the symposium have now all been reserved, the MCA will be live streaming all the action throughout the museums creative studios!

Symposiums and speakers not your thing? Not to worry, the 17th Annual Fernside Skate Comp is also happening on Friday down at the Waterloo Skate Park (Cnr McEvoy and Elizabeth Streets, Waterloo). Whether you want to strut your stuff (there’s divisions for Juniors (6-11yrs), Teens (12-17yrs), Girls (all ages) and Opens (18+)) and compete for some rad prizes, or maybe just come along and enjoy some jaw dropping, edge of your seat skating action – we’re sure this is going to be one amazing Friday afternoon! Check out the Weave website for more info.

Our two wild cards are great if you’re not based in Sydney, or are looking for a road trip with the family! We start out at The Australian Walkabout Wildlife Park in Singleton who are offering the unique opportunity to have a day personally assisting the Rangers as they do their daily activities- feeding, encounters and cleaning of the cages of the animals. The opportunity will also provide wildlife encounters, see the Aboriginal sites, Aboriginal tools, shelters, bush tuckers, bush medicines and develop bush skills! Setting you back 38 bones (and the drive!), we think this is definitely a once in lifetime opportunity not to be missed! Get in touch with the Singleton Youth Venue by calling 02 6571 4687 to book your place.

As our final NSW event, this has most exciting Saturday out we’ve heard of in a long time! Cowra (about 4 hours drive from Sydney) is hosting a giant (yep, we mean giant!) 1000ft slip and slide on Sunday the 18th. With three sessions on during the day, there’s plenty of time to head down there and be back in Sydney for dinner, all for just $35 for 90 minutes unlimited sliding! Tickets can be booked here or on the day.

13)

Our pick of the Melbourne events is in the ever trendy Fitzroy, with Yarra Youth Services putting on the SPECTACLE event on Saturday the 18th at Atherton Gardens Housing Estate on Napier Street. This free all-ages festival includes a stack of live music and hip hop performances, DJs, spoken word poetry and an explosive combination of breakdancing and painting on canvas! Join in the creative capers or just come along and enjoy the show! The day will also help fundraising efforts for Yarra’s Wild Beasts Basketball team to participate in this year’s South Sudanese Australian Basketball Competition – so head on down and support a good cause while enjoying a great day out!
