What grades do I need and how old do I have to be?

What grades did I need?

You don't need any qualifications to do an apprenticeship or traineeship. Anyone who can work legally can do one. This includes you, if you are:

  • a student at high school or finishing and leaving school
  • a mature age person who wants to start a new career
  • an experienced worker who wants a qualification

Your apprenticeship or traineeship can be done on a full-time or part-time basis, but this does depend on the award. Contact ABL Apprenticeships Centre (ABLAC) on 1300 652 236 and find out if it applies to your chosen qualification. Just about anyone who wants to combine training with working and getting paid is suitable for an apprenticeship or traineeship.

How old do I have to be?

Anyone over the age of 15 can do an apprenticeship or traineeship. If you leave school before the minimum school leaving age of 15 or from 01 Jan10 you have to be 17 before you can leave school, you may still be able to do a full-time apprenticeship or traineeship. Contact ABL Apprenticeships Centre (ABLAC) on 1300 652 236 and find out what the rules are.
